Get Ready for Windows 11: An Important Upgrade for Your 大发彩票 Computer

Back to ITS Updates

To ensure all 大发彩票-managed Windows computers are equipped with the latest features, enhanced security, and a more streamlined experience, ITS is rolling out an essential upgrade program beginning this July. We'll be transitioning all eligible Windows 10 computers to Windows 11 (version 24H2).

This upgrade is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and security across campus. We're managing the process department by department, and you'll receive a personalized email notification detailing your specific upgrade date. This email will also remind you about keeping your computer on campus, powered on, and plugged in overnight for a smooth update.

We appreciate your cooperation as we work to keep our campus technology secure and up-to-date!

Your Questions Answered: Windows 11 Upgrade FAQs

We understand you might have some questions about this upgrade. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions:

A: Absolutely, yes! If you prefer to have more control over when your upgrade happens, you can kick it off yourself. Just open the Software Center app on your computer (you can find it in your Start Menu or by searching for "Software Center"). Navigate to the Updates section, click on the "Windows 11, version 24H2 ..." icon, then click "Install" (and confirm by clicking "Install" again.) Leave your computer powered on and plugged in while your computer updates.

Quick Tip: ITS is increasingly using Software Center as a hub for self-service software, updates, and helpful links.

A: The update process is estimated to take about one hour. While your machine might remain technically "usable" during parts of this time, please be aware that it will require several restarts. To minimize disruption to your workday, we're scheduling these updates to begin at 6 PM on your designated date, allowing ample time for completion overnight.

A: For the most efficient upgrade, we recommend leaving your machine on campus. However, if you genuinely need to take your computer off campus around your scheduled upgrade date, please notify the ITS Service Desk in advance. We'll be happy to defer your update to a more convenient time.

A: Don't worry! The upgrade process is designed to work even if your machine enters sleep or hibernation mode overnight. Just make sure it's plugged in and connected to the network as instructed in your email.

A: This in-place upgrade installs the new operating system and automatically migrates your apps, data, and settings. While issues are rare, we highly recommend that you back up any sensitive or critical data to Google Drive.

A: While issues are rare, we highly recommend that you back up any sensitive or critical data to Google Drive.  Safeguarding your data is always a good practice. Here are a few ways to safely back up your files:

  • Crashplan (Code42) Users: Please double-check that your Crashplan backup is actively syncing all the files you wish to protect.
  • Google Drive: You can easily store your important files securely in the cloud using Google Drive.

A: It's easy to confirm your update!

  1. Press the Windows Key + I to open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Scroll down and select About from the left-side menu. You should see "Windows 11 Education" listed under "Edition" and "24H2" under "Version."

A: Depending on which specific version of Windows 10 you're currently running, you might not notice significant visual changes immediately. Many of the improvements are "under the hood," focusing on ensuring you have the smoothest, safest, and most efficient computing experience possible. You'll gain access to new productivity features, an updated Start Menu, and enhanced security protocols.

A: ITS is initiating these updates to bring all our campus machines to the latest version of Windows 11. This is crucial because Microsoft will begin limiting support for Windows 10 in October 2025. By upgrading now, we ensure your PCs continue to receive vital security updates and maintain full functionality, protecting you from potential vulnerabilities.
